One of the reasons I’ll be talking about blogs and why they’re your social media hub on Feb. 2, 2011 is that it’s a great topic and one I sincerely believe in. Another reason is that Mike Stelzner, creator of the online Blogging Success Summit, invited me to speak and he is persuasive. His presenters are a stellar line-up including Technorati’s CEO Richard Jalichandra; Scott Monty of Ford; ProBlogger’s Darren Rowse; Copyblogger’s Brian Clark; Douglas Karr, co-author, Corporate Blogging for Dummies; Mari Smith, co-author, Facebook Marketing; Jay Baer, co-author, The Now Revolution and more.
We are not paid for the time we put in preparing and giving our presentations. But we get to be a part of the tsunami of publicity he builds around the event. You can tune in from your desk, BTW. The two dozen sessions are spread out over a three-week period. And if you miss one, you can listen to and watch the playback as well as get the slides.
Which brings me to my point
The way Mike and the rest of the team at Social Media Examiner have created buzz around this online conference exemplifies what effective blogging is: great content, organized through an editorial calendar, presented on a well-designed blog, repeated consistently and spread seamlessly via other social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
He has a great co-sponsor, BlogWorld. And he gets a small army of fans (his tribe) to spread news about the conference for him. Some are using affiliate links (full disclosure: I am one) so we get a commission if you register through our link. Thanks for your support BTW. It is much appreciated.
Recipe for a successful blogging conference
If there is a secret recipe for a successful conference it might look something like this:
1. start planning months ahead of time
2. create a sign-up page packed with information and testimonials
3. offer bonuses (people love them)
4. make a big announcement
5. repeat
6. remind about 50% off deadline (deadlines work)
7. repeat
8. create blog posts around the topic of the event (7 Blogging Tips From Top Bloggers, etc.)
9. remind again re 50% off deadline
10. remind your affiliates and fans to promote
11. tell your affiliates exactly what to say (he does this via email)
12. remind everyone that TODAY is the last day to register and get 50% off
13. keep reminding folks to register after the deadline has passed
Over 600 have already signed up, including folks who work for big brands like Tupperware, Home Depot, SAP, the World Bank, General Mills, Sheraton, Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Merck, Vanguard and Chiquita.
>> Start here to get 50% off (offer ends at midnight Pacific tonight).
P.S.
Mike didn’t tell me to say this. But it struck me that he is doing what the conference is teaching.
