Gartner annually releases a Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies. Take the hype cycle construct with a grain of salt, if you will. But I love the chart. The 2008 hype cycle report illustrates that corporate blogging is now on the upward slope of “enlightenment” heading towards mainstream adoption. Note that microblogging (meaning Twitter and the new Yammer, for companies) is headed for the Peak of Inflated Expectations. Neville Hobson takes a broader look at the 2008 cycle, comparing it with 2007 and 2006.
Compare to 2005 hype cycle chart
Here’s what I wrote three years ago about corporate blogging and the 2005 hype cycle chart. Note that corporate blogging is halfway down the slope, about to hit bottom at the Trough of Disillusionment. Even then, Gartner pegged Corporate Blogging with a “clear” circle, meaning “less than two years” to mainstream adoption. Interesting, huh? It hasn’t happened yet. But I think it will.
